UPDATES IN RED, PLEASE READ
Class of 2021, you enter your senior year in a very, very interesting time.  Thank you to the students who have already contacted me about your summer assignments. I wanted to wait until a decision was made before I updated the web site. As you can imagine, this year will be run VERY differently than it ever has in years past. For my class, it will mean a much more streamlined curriculum. You all will have a unique experience. This looks like a more structured curriculum with less "surprises", less group activities, and less collaboration in the traditional sense.  Though I am sad you are going to lose out on some of the time-honored traditions of my class, I think you will appreciate knowing what to expect most of the time each day of the week. In some ways, this may make things easier for a lot of you. With that said, here is what you need to do for the summer assignments:
1) Read 'Color of Water' by James McBride. You all got this list at the end of school, so some have already read it. Take notes. You will NOT be required to turn in the notes, but as school starts, you may forget key parts. The test we have is not a traditional paper and pencil test and you will want to know your stuff. :-)
____
2)
Choose one of the following prompts from this link, which a sample of part of the end of the year Cambridge exam:  SCROLL DOWN to see prompts  and write a 600-700 word essay making a formal argument based on the prompts  using any background knowledge you have about an subject as evidence. (some students have emailed me and told me they could not find the links. Please re-read this section again. The link is in this first sentence right above this. Click where it says 'from this link...')
*You will HANDWRITE this essay AND type it up on Turnitin.com by the due date which is now September 4th
(You will get the turnitin.com details when we return to school)* Write out the FULL prompt you chose on top of the written and typed essay and the word count. Students caught plagiarizing will be removed from the class and placed in English IV standard course. This is a diagnostic intended for me to see where your writing level is so I can know where you are and how I need to teach based on your learning needs. It will be worth a significant grade, but of course I will consider that you are learning.
SEE YOU IN THE FALL!

Your unofficial scores are available for you to view as of August 14, 2020. I have all of your logins. Email me with the subject line 'AICE Score Request' and your name. I will NOT get it if you don't have that subject line. Also, if you pass you are guaranteed an elective college credit. However, if you have a score of an A or B and want to try and appeal to your adviser or the registrar to make the class replace an English credit, you can show them this 'Appeal Letter Packet' I compiled to advocate on your behalf.
